Visit of Governor-General
Arrangements in connection with the visit of the Governor-General, Sir Bernard Freyberg,® V.C., to Oamaru on March 19 and 20 were discussed by the executive of the Oamaru Returned Services' Association on Tuesday night, and it was agreed to ask ail returned servicemen who will attend the civic reception in the Oamaru Public Gardens at noon, Friday, March 20, to assemble at 11.45 a.m. at the main gates of the Gardens, dress to be mufti, no decora-, tions or riboons. but wearing the R.S.A. badge. R.S.A. members will be under the direction of Major M. H. R. Jones, and in the event of wet weather, they will meet at the Opera House. Mr I. T. Catto (president) was in the chair, and there were also present Messrs R. E. Dimick, W. Burdett, D. H. Scott, J.'m. Macaulay, A. Bremner, J. P. McLeod, J. T. Burrows, C. Zimmermann, E. M Freeman and L. Clark. , Messrs Scott, Freeman, J. Beckingsale and. the secretary were appointed delegates to tile conferences of branches at Dunedin on March 2, remits to the conference being left in their hands. The enrolment of three new members, and eight inward transfers and six outward transfers were approved. The hospital visitors, Messrs Bremner and Burdett (December) and McLeod and Macaulay (January) submitted their reports, showing there were fewer servicemen in hospital than for some years, and Messrs Zimmermann and Dimick were appointed hospital visitors for the current month. _ , „ _ It was reported that the Red Cross Society had arranged for the supply oi clothing to servicemen at Waipiata, and Mr Scott reported on his visit to the sanatorium, stating that the men were all happy and deeply appreciative of the action of the executive and Red Cross in providing transport foi a trip to their homes at Christmas. Mr Freeman submitted his report on the activities of the local Immigration Welfare Committee, and stated it was not proposed to allocate immigrants to Oamaru unless accommodation could be obtained for them. An appeal had been made to householders for such accommodation. but it had also been pointed out, Mr Freeman said, that a large number of returned servicemen in Oamaiu also wanted accommodation. A suggestion had been made that as there were not many inmates at Victoria Home, part of this building could be used and some of the old hotel buildings could be made suitable for the purpose.
