PROMISES BY GREECE

CIVIL SERVICE REDUCTIONS AMERICAN MISSION CLAIMS NON-FULFILMENT N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent. Rec. 9 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 23. A report from Athens states that Mr Dwight Griswold, head of the American mission to Greece, - issued a statement complaining that the Greek Government had failed to fulfil the promises of reform given to the Americans, in return for increased aid. Mr Griswold said that although the Greek Government had promised to reduce the number of civil servants by 15,000, it had so far dispensed with only 6000. Had the Government kept its pledge it could have saved 6,000,000 drachmas monthly and balanced its budget in spite of increased expenditure on the army. The Athens correspondent of the ‘New York Herald Tribune attribute 1 -' the Greek refusal to reduce the civil service to the desire of many ministers to “ retain their own personal army of political hacks.”
