NEW SOUTH WALES MATCH HOME SIDE’S BIG TOTAL Rec. 9 p.m. SYDNEY, Nov. 8. India has a very stern fight ahead to avert an outright defeat in the match against New South Wales. Facing the State’s total of 561, India has lost four wickets for 182 runs, Amarnath, India’s captain, was unable to play to-day because of a gastric complaint, and Hazare deputised. Hazare —a brilliant batsman with a complete stroke array—played a beautiful innings to-day. The New South Wales fielding, was vastly superior to that of the Indians, and the State’s bowling was more varied. The Indians were not happy opposed to the fast bowlers, Lindwail and Miller. The New South Wales batsmen made merry to-day, Miller, Pettiford. and Lindwall all hitting out freely. Miller took 18, including four 4’s, off the opening over of the day, and in all batted 113 minutes for 72, with 11 boundaries. Pettiford was only 105 minutes making his 73, and Lindwall hit up 47 in 37 minutes. The State’s innings was closed with eight wickets down for 561 after 410 minutes’ play. India opened badly, losing two wickets for 35 runs. Mankad and Hazare then engaged in a fine partnership which was worth 99 runs in 64 minutes. Mankad was bowled off his foot after a good but somewhat lucky innings. He was dropped before scoring, and again at eight, but both were hard chances. Hazare gave a most nolished display. At stumps he had been in 118 minutes and hit 10 4’s.
