DOMINION RESOURCES

GREATEST TRADING NATION AID FOR DEVASTATED AREAS Rec. 8 p.m. LAKE SUCCESS, Oct. 3. Mr James Thorn (New Zealand) told the Assembly’s Economic and Financial Committee to-day that New Zealand, in proportion to its population was the greatest trading nation on earth. He was discussing the report of the Social and Economic Council and said that New Zealand was obviously very interested in any attempt, to rehabilitate devastated areas and strengthen the economies of undeveloped countries. New Zealand, in 1946, exported goods worth nearly £100,000,000 and imported nearly £72,000,000 worth. This trade enabled New Zealand to maintain comparatively high standards of living and she was most anxious to sustain and increase it. Some criticism of the progress of the Social and Economic Council was justified but it would be a miracle if it had made no mistakes in view of the great difficulties which confronted it from the beginning.
