BRITISH TEXTILE SUPPLIES IMPROVEMENT EXPECTED LATER N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent Rec. 8.30 p.m. LONDON, Aug. 19. “ I have a feeling that the supply position for both wool and cotton textiles may improve, but any improvement is likely to be preceded by a very serious gap in supplies in the case of individual manufacturers in New Zealand who are not adequately covered by stock and deliveries at the end of this year and for. the first three months of 1948,” said Mr D. I. Macdonald, secretary of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation, commenting upon reports in the British press that New Zealand clothing manufacturers were anxious about the supply situation as a result of cuts in the textiles quotas. Mr Macdonald, who has spent six weeks since he returned from Geneva, where he represented New Zealand as an observer at the International ready invasion has been made by securvisiting British manufacturers in all parts of the United Kingdom, said that although quotas were definitely completely removed in the case of cotton textiles, the position with regard to woollens was still not free and still not .finalised. While New Zealand manufacturers had every reason to be apprehensive, he thought some of their anxiety was a little premature, It was essential that New Zealand manufacturers should 'keep in the closest touch with United Kingdom suppliers to ensure that details of their requirements were known well in advance. British suppliers were very anxious to help their New Zealand customers, and he thought that if manufacturers in the Dominion could get through the next few months there were prospects that the supply position would improve throughout 1948.
