STEVEDORES’ DISPUTE
FACTORY SUPPLIES HELD UP MASS UNEMPLOYMENT THREATENED Rec. 10 p.m. SYDNEY. Aug. 19. Over 50,000 workers in 400 factories in the Sydney metropolitan area may lose their jobs within a fortnight because of the sugar shortage resulting from the stevedores’ dispute. The employers’ spokesman says that the products of the factories include confectionery, ice cream, biscuits, cakes, pastry, cordials, jam and fruit preserves. Ihe mam sugar refinery in Sydney will close to-morrow unless the wa t e , -froni dispute is settled in time for it to receive supplies from the cargo of 8000 tons of raw sugar which is immobilised in the harbour in three ships. Eighteen vessels and 1200 watersiders are now involved and more than 60,000 tons of cargo is banked up on the wharves.
