AMERICA TO DEMAND ABOLITION

Rec. 11 p.m. NEW YORK, Aug. 18. The American Under Secretary of State for Economic Affairs will go to London to-morrow or Wednesday for what Geneva trade conference sources describe as showdown talks with the British on imperial preference tariffs,

says the Geneva correspondent of the New York Times. These talks will determine whether the Geneva conference will be a success or only a tentative move towards freer trade. According to all indications in Geneva, Mr Clayton will present to the British a demand for complete abolition of a large number of imperial preferences. The British will be asked to make up their minds once and for all whether they want United States tariff concessions or want to retain their competitive advantage in Empire markets.
