FURTHER CLASHES REPORTED

Rec. 8 p.m. BATAVIA, Aug. 17 The air raid sirens twice signalled the presence of Dutch planes overhead in Jogjakarta to-day during the Independence Day celebrations, says an Antara despatch from the Republican capital. The celebrations were characterised by soberness and simplicity. The hoisting over Dr Sukarno's palace of the original red and white flag that was raised in Batavia two years ago, when the Republic was first proclaimed was the highlight of the celebrations. Arson and intimidation of the population were being generally experienced in the boundary areas. says a Dutch communique to-day. More clashes in Java, Sumatra and the Celebes with the Republicans were reported. Dutch casualties yesterday were three killed and twelve wounded. It is reported from Lamahabang, West Java, that a Dutchman, his son and daughter were tortured and murdered in a “ disgusting fashion” before the arrival of the Dutch forces.
