VIRTUALLY ABANDONED
SEARCH FOR FURTHER BODIES CRASHED AMERICAN PLANE’S PASSENGERS Rec 9 p.m. HONOLULU Aug. 18. Fifteen aircraft and 12 ships to-day vainly continued «*the search for Mr George Acheson, chairman of the Allied Control Council in Japan, and the four United States Army men who have been missing since their plane crashed in the sea 70 miles west of Honolulu on Saturday night. The wrecked aircraft was an army SuperFortress, not General MacArthur’s per sonal plane, as was first reported j Members of the boat crew who picked up two survivors on a raft after the sinking of the plane, and rowed for three hours in a choppy sea. said that sharks were nosing every object afloat. Sergeant Holland was dragged into the boat with sharks all around mm. Colonel Huglin said that he kicked repeatedly at sharks that “ nuzzled him while he was in the water The military authorities have virtually abandoned hope of finding any more bodies, but they have ordered the search fleet to keep a sharp eye on all debris ih the hope that the diplomatic pouches and documents being carried to Washington by Mr Acheson and the army officers would be recovered.
