VIOLENT EXPLOSION
CADIZ SHIPYARDS PEOPLE FLEE FROM CITY HOSPITALS FILLED WITH INJURED Rec. 1.30 a.m. MADRID, Aug. 19. A violent explosion occurred last night in the shipyards at Cadiz. The casualties are not yet known but ail Cadiz hospitals are filled with injured, some being sent to hospitals in nearby towns. The explosion originated in a chemical warehouse at the shipyards and spread to a stock of torpedoes and munitions at a submarine depot half a mile away. Light and .water services in Cadiz have been cut and people fearing new explosions are fleeing from the city. A maternity home is reported to have been destroyed and all the nuns and patients killed. The explosion shook houses 15 miles away and repercussions were felt in Seville, 60 miles distant. The authorities have forbidden all except rescue workers, doctors and nurses to enter the city. The Spanish Cabinet, after an emergency session, announced that it was taking the most urgent measures to deal with the explosion. The Minister of the Navy, Admiral Moreno, is leaving Madrid to take charge in Cadiz.
