Mr W. R. Clarke, chairman of the Otago Harbour Board, left yesterday for Wellington. Mr M. Silverstone left yesterday for Wellington to attend a meeting of directors of the Reserve Bank. Mr John T. Leech will leave to-day for Auckland to judge the vocal music at the Auckland competitions festival. Mr J. J. Marlow, vice-chairman of the Otago Provincial Patriotic Council, who is a delegate to the conference of National Patriotic Councils to be held next week in Wellington, left for the north yesterday. The other Otago delegate is Mr A. E. Russell, secretary of the council. The award of the Philip Neill Prize in Music to be divided evenly between Mrs Dorothy Irene Scott and Miss Dorothea A. Franchi, was approved by the council of the University of Otago at its meeting yesterday. Miss B. A. Collier was yesterday appointed by the council of the University of Otago as a tutor for the Association of Country Education. Mr J. B. Mackie was yesterday appointed by the University Council as lecturer in surveying at the Otago School of Mines Mr A. Wachner, Mayor of Invercargill, passed through Dunedin by the express yesterday on his way to Wellington. Mr Wachner is a member of a deputation of South Island bodies which is to advocate the claims of Invercargill as the southern terminus for the Tasman air service before the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, the Minister of Public Works, Mr Semple, and the Minister of Finance, Mr Nash. Captain J. A. McPherson, New Zealand Regiment, who recently returned from service with J Force in Japan, has ben appointed Area Staff Officer at the Dunedin Army Office. He succeeds Major A. de la Cour, who left with the last J Force replacement draft. Tributes to the accomplishments in the trade union field of Mr W. B. Richards, president of the Tramways Union and vice-president of the Federation of Labour, were paid at the first annual ball of the Dunedin transport workers, which was held in the Concert Chamber last night. He was presented with a handsome clock from his fellow workers. Making the presentation, Mr A. E. Scoones, vice-president of the Dunedin branch of the Tramways Union, described Mr Richards as one of their " most valued members.” Cr McCrae. chairman of the Transport Committee of the City Counsil, said that Mr Richards had reached a very high office in New Zealand. He remarked that he had always been the best of friends with Mr Richards and he hoped those relations would continue. Passengers who left for the north yesterdav were Mr J. A Roy. M- W. A Hudson, Mr P G. Connolly, Mr R. Walls, Mr G. Benson, Mr and Mrs Moody. Mr G Nimmo, Mrs R. Richardson (Wellington). Mr C. Thompson (Palmerston North), Mr R. S. Lambourne, Mr J. J. Kernohan. Mrs B. Jesson (Auckland). Those who left fo r the south were Mr F. Hitchens, Mr G. G. Hunt, Mr-D. Musson, Mr A. J. Kingsland.
