CHIEF LIBRARIAN

DR G. H. SCHOLEFIELD RETIREMENT ANNOUNCED P.A. WELLINGTON, Aug. 19. The retirement as from the' end of October next of Dr G. H. Scholefield, 0.8. E., chief librarian of the General Assembly Library, was announced tonight by the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser. Dr Scholefield, who was born in Dunedin in 1877, had a distinguished career. Before becoming parliamentary librarian in 1926, he worked for many years for newspapers in Wellington and Christchurch, and was a correspondent in London from 1908 to 1919. during which time he acted as a war correspondent on European fronts and at sea during the first world war. He has published several works on New Zealand subjects and founded “ Who’s Who in New Zealand." He has taken a prominent part in the affairs of the New Zealand Library Association. of which he was president in 1940. He is a Fellow of the Library Association of Great Britain and a

member of the American Library Association. He was a member of the National Historical Committee and honorary secretary for the first eight years of the Institute of Pacific Relations in New Zealand. He was first president of P.E.N., New Zealand Centre, and also of the New Zealand Exhbris Society. Duung the 21 years he has been chief librarian of the General Assembly Library, Dr Scholefield has developed it from a purely parliamentary institution into the leading research library of the Dominion, and it is frequented by students from all parts of New Zealand. During Dr Scholefield’s term the book collection has increased from 105,000 to 180,000 volumes. Dr Scholefield will be succeeded by Mr W. S. Wauchop, M.A., assistant chief librarian, who joined the staff in 1924. He has been prominent in the repertory movement as an actor and producer, and is well known as a painter of New Zealand landscapes. He was national director ; of the centenial pageantry. Mr Wauchop will be succeeded as assistant chief librarian by 'Mr J. O. Wilson, 8.C0m., at present chief of the reference section.
