NEW CARGO SHIP
TRADE WITH DOMINION MANY NOTABLE FEATURES The twin screw motor ship Hurunui, which was launched on August 14 on the Tyne by Mrs J. A. Beasley, wife of the Australian High Commissioner in the United Kingdom, is one of two sister ships at present under construction by Vickers-Armstrong, Ltd., for the New Zealand Shipping Company and the associated Federal Steam Navigation Company. She has been designed for the general and refrigerated cargo service between New Zealand. Australia and the United Kingdom, and will form a notable addition to the company's fleet, as she will be capable of carrying some 14,000 tons deadweight of cargo.
The Hurunui’s gross tonnage is approximately 11,150 and she will have a service speed (loaded) of 17 knots. A number of interesting features are incorporated in the new ship, which is being, built to comply with the latest requirements of the Ministry of Transport. She is said to be of handsome appearance, having a deep cruiser stern and a well-raked “ softnosed " bow. The accommodation is of a high standard for a ship not intended to carry passengers, all the berths being situated amidships. The vessel is particularly well equipped with derricks. There are 12 unstayed steel derrick posts, in pairs, serving the main hatches, at the foot of which are winch control houses. In the ample cargo facilities of the shin 500,000 cubic feet of space is available for refrigerated foodstuffs. Air circulation is provided in the cargo spaces and a de-odorising equipment is also fitted for the removal of any objectionable fumes or taints left behind after discharging cargo.
