NEW HONOUR
MR MURRAY FALCONER HUNTERIAN PROFESSOR RECOGNITION OF WORK Mr Murray Falconer, head of the Neuro-surgical Department at the Dunedin Hospital and lecturer in neurosurgery at the Otago Medical School, has been appointed by the Royal College of Surgeons, England, as a Hunterian professor. Advice to this effect was received by the University Council yesterday from Sir Charles Hercus, dean of the Medical School. “This important award is in recognition of Mr Falconer's contribution to the surgery of the intervertebral disc, the subject on which he proposes to deliver the Hunterian lecture during his visit to Great Britain in November,” Sir Charles wrote. “The term of the appointment is one year, and the duties consist of delivering a lecture to the Royal College of Surgeons of England at Lincoln’s Inn Field. “ 1 am sure the council would like to extend its congratulations to Mr Falconer on this important award,” he added. “As far as our records show, three graduates of this school have previously held a Hunterian professorship They were Mr A. R. Mowlem, Sir Archibald Mclndoe and Mr W. B. Highet. I do not think that Mr Highet ever delivered the Hunterian lecture, but he received it in recognition of his work on the peripheral nerves, which won him the Jacksonian Prize. Mi Highet lost his life by enemy action before he could deliver his lecture, but in the official records of the college he is listed as one of the Hunterian professors.” . . , The council decided to congratulate Mr Falconer on his appointment.
