SUGGESTIONS TO CONFERENCE
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PROPOSALS “ On the face of it, it does not seem as if we are doing much,” said Mr C. J. Wood, at a special meeting of the council of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce yesterday when the president. Mr A. C. Stephens, explained that the Associated Chambers of Commerce had asked for recommendations to be submitted to the national conference called by the Prime Minister. Mr Fraser, in connection with aid to Britain. Mr Stephens said that a committee of the Dunedin Chamber had submitted to the Associated Chambers a suggestion that the following matters should be agreed to:— Petrol rationing to be introduced immediately. • Fifty per cent, of our sterling funds to be frozen for 10 years. Production to be increased by the working of a compulsory 44liour week in basic industries, such as woollen goods, footwear, fertiliser, transport, and the waterfront, 40 hours ordinary time and four hours at time and a-half, payment by results to be applied as far as possible. It was also suggested, Mr Stephens added, that the Government should give the public a full statement of the position so as to encourage co-opera-tion. The recommendations were approved.
