WIN FOR SOUTH
Hockey
INTERISLAND GAME TEAMS WELL MATCHED P.A. WELLINGTON, Aug. 16. South Island beat North Island by three goals to two in the annual match played on the Basin Reserve this afternoon. The ground was wet, and there was a light northerly wind. The teams were:— North Island.—R. Jenkins, J. S. Buchan, R. Adcock, R. Stewart, J. Dunning, D. Mulheron. D. Neale, S. Faulkner, R. Roughton, L, R. Hill, T. Hooper. South Island.—K. Beach, B. Bedford, L. Hunter, W. Morirs, C. V. Walter, A. J. Low, E. Gribble, E. Thomas, R. Calvert, J. Reece, N. Wales. North attacked from the outset. The first goal came when R. H. Roughton, North centre-forward and captain, brought the ball up from half way, and with S. Faulkner passed B. Bedford, right full-back, to send a fast one in. Two minutes later Faulkner, who worked with Roughton for the first goal, trapped the ball in the cricle and sent it in to put North two in the lead. Shortly before half time N. Wales, South’s left wing, scored. The half time score was North 2, South 1. After half time North attacked incessantly, but South equalised the score when J. Reece, inside-left, shot the ball in. It came off Jenkins’s pads and he followed in and made no mistake the second time. South went into the lead when J. Reece was passed the ball in the circle and shot it high into the goal. Jenkins made another one of his spectacular saves two minutes later, when he was left alone to defend the goal. The game ended with South on the attack.
