Southern Has One Point Margin
PIRATES LOSE TO VARSITY A Southern wrested the lead from Pirates when the Otago Rugby Football Union’s senior competition was continued on Saturday in ideal playing conditions. The meeting of the four leading teams attracted a crowd of nearly 5000 to Carisbrook. In the early match Southern gave an excellent display to defeat the disappointing Kaikorai team by the decisive margin of 19 points to 3. The main game between University A and Pirates began most promisingly, but play fell away in the second half, and at times the football was of a scrappy nature. Pirates did not look like a winning team at any part, and turning its opportunities to far better account University defeated the competition leaders by 20 points to 3. The results of these games was to give Southern a margin of one point over Pirates, with University A three points behind the leaders, and Kaikorai and Taieri (which defeated Dunedin by 11 points to 9) another two points back. Zingari-Richmond, University B and Union each scored wins. With the number of playing Saturdays limited, the final outcome of the competition is still in doubt, and probably in the next round of matches Southern will be pitted against University A and Pirates against Kaikorai, which may help to bring the championship nearer to finality.
