Earl Mountbatten Sworn in Office

NEW DELHI, Aug. 15. Earl Mountbatten was to-day sworn in as Governor-General of India by the Chief Justice of India, Sir Harilal Kenia. and later, administered the oaths of office to the new Cabinet. Earl Mountbatten, after the swear-ing-in ceremony’, made, a State drive to the Council Chamber, where he announced to the Constitutenl Assembly that he would ask to be relieved as Governor-General on March 31, 1948. at the end of what he called the “ interim period,” or completion of details for India’s division. Earl Mountbatten said: “ I feel , that India as soon as possible should be at liberty to have one of her own peonle as Governor-General.” The President of the Constituent Assembly.
