COURTS DECISION

“ REASONED CONCLUSION ” INCENTIVE TO PRODUCTION p.A. WELLINGTON, Aug. 17. The president of the New Zealand Employers’ Federation, Mr Percy Coyle, said to-night that he thought the Court of Arbitration had reached a reasoned conclusion in its wages pronouncement. “If higher wages are earned and increased production results, the employers should have little quarrel with the adjustments, he said. The higher wages should not be regarded as a gratuity, but as an incentive. A relief in taxation should be simultaneous with the removal of subsidies, otherwise the increases might not mean much to the workers. If there were no corresponding adjustment in costs, employment might be an early problem. To keep the workers employed, industry must pay its. way. The reference to dividends in justification of higher wages was not a good argument. If high costs were to remain and there was any reduction in turnover and no incentive to production, dividends would soon go >and employment with them.
