CHATHAM CUP

MOSGIEL LOSES GAME SOUTH ISLAND FINAL In the South Island linal for the Chatham Cup contest, Technical (Canterbury) defeated Mosgiel by lour goals to three in a fast but even game, which was watched by a large crowd at the Caledonian Ground. For the greater part of the time Mosgiel held a lead, but in the final stages the Canterbury players added two goais in quick succession to win the match. Technical kicked off and advanced on the left, a cross from Thomas being turned goalwards by Grieve, but Martin saved well at the expense of a corner. Storer forced Martin to punch clear later and the ball went to Davidson, who sent a long pass between the backs, where McCloy shot. Davey attempted to save, but Skinner tapped thp ball into the net. Technical broke away ,and Dean sent to Thomas, who equalised with a hard drive. Davidson gave Skinner a chance, but Davey blocked, and a minute later the same movement ended in Skinner slamming the ball past Davey. O'Malley stopped a dangerous right attack ana sent to Bailey, Martin saving. Dean again sent his forwards away .and Storer, cutting in, gave Martin no chance with a flick shot. Bailey, in a fine solo run, tricked Stevens and drew Martin out of goal, but his shot went past the upright, and in a Mosgiel breakaway Davey saved a fast shot from Skinner to make the half time score two all. Technical took up the atack early in the second spell, and Bailey cleverly worked for position and passed back to Lucas, who missed an easy chance. Mills and Davidson brought play back, and McCloy sent across the goal for Upland to scoop the ball past Davey amidst great excitement. Skinner later gave Pearce a chance close in, but Davey managed to clear. The game was at its best at this stage. Technical made a determined effort, and Eryce beat Lucas for the ball, sending to Pearce, who shot. Davey was penalised for steps, and a melee around the visitors’ goal was cleared by Dean. Lucas hit the upright, and Bailey sent to Grieve, who equalised. A minute later Technical gained the lead, Bailey going through fast to beat Martin. Nicholson was robbed by O'Malley, the All Black receiving a hostile reception when he tried to “ lose ” the ball over the fence, and was reprimanded by the referee. Mosgiel tried desperately to score the equalising goal, but the ball ,was in midfield when time was called with the scores: Technical 4, Mosgiel 3. Mr L. Swanson was the referee.
