ENGINEERING TRADES SOME BRANCHES STILL NOT POPULAR l-"-, : Early this year engineering firms were apprehensive, about what appeared to be the likelihood of a bottleneck in the trade through a lack of apprentices to carry on the work, inquiries made by the Daily Times yesterday showed that, although more boys were taking up apprenticeships as fitters or turners than previously a shortage still existed m the moulding and boilermaking trades, primarily because of a lack of understanding of the nature of the work. As an indication of the opportunities available to boys in the moulding trade, the manager of a local firm said that unskilled men were now being trained and promoted to do the work of skilled moulders, and were being paid at full journeymen’s rates. Local firms would welcome applications from boys of a good type to become apprentices to the moulding and boilermaking trades. In many cases boys had been misinformed regarding the type of work and the amenities of employment. He added that considerable improvements had been made in engineering shops this year, and were still being introduced.
