THEFT CHARGES
TWO MEN SENTENCED “An inexplicable temptation to which he succumbed ” was the submission oi counsel, Mr C. H. Stevens, when Alistair Alexander James Matheson, aged 20, was charged with the theft of suede gloves and a silk scarf to a total value of £2 5s from a dancehall cloakroom. The case was heard before Mr J. D. Willis, S.M.. in the City Police Court yesterday.—ln view of the accused's previous good record, the magistrate ordered that he should be placed on probation for a twoyear period, his wages to be under the control of the probation officer during that time. Sentenced to Hard Labour Arthur Miller Keen entered a plea oi guilty when charged with the theft of a wallet containing £3O and a pair of gloves, the property of Richard Henry Burgess.—Chief Detective T. Y Hall stated that the accused had spent several days in Christchurch with a married woman, and that he had come to Dunedin and given himself up to the police when the money was all spent. The gloves and wallet had been recovered.—A sentence of three months’ imprisonment with hard labour was imposed. Seaman Charged George Skinner, a seaman from a coastal ship, was convicted and discharged on a charge of drunkenness and was fined £5 for using obscene language In a public place.
