SOUTHLAND NOTES

EARLY FOALINGS REPORTED Special to the Daily Times INVERCARGILL, Aug. 14. Southland stables will be strongly represented at the Otago Hunt meeting at Wingatui next month, A few horses reappearing after a spell may not be sufficiently forward to show their best, but others which have been campaigned in Canterbury in recent weeks will represent a strong hand. With a dry spell of weather being experienced in recent weeks, trainers have made an early start, and more horses have been recommissioned at this time of the season than usual. What is thought to be the earliest foaling return for the season for the Southland and Otago districts is reported from the Mount Barker Stud, Wanaka, whdre the Paper Money mare. Withdrawal produced a Royal Chief colt on August 8. At Win ton, Sally Sage has produced a filly to Royal Chief. Haughty Winner Gelding A newcomer to F. W. Ellis’s team at Invercargill is the Haughty Winner gelding Fonso, who was placed in six of his eight starts as a three-year-old last season when trained by A. Griffin at Riccarton He is one of Haughty Winner’s first crop, and is a good type, being out of the Shambles mare Signorina, whose dam, Bella Donna, was got by Vasco from Belle Clair, by St. Clair. Doulton, a winner of a non-totalisator race as a two-year-old last season, has been taken up by F. W. Ellis He has not grown much, but he has furnished a good deal. Eriskay continues to get through useful work at headquarters,, and she promises to strip in good order for early spring meetings. She won four races in 16 starts last season. Plans for Grand Pal J. Gray intends racing Grand Pal at the Otago Hunt meeting at Wingatui next month. He has done a good amount of work, and is in fairly solid condition He may be tried over further ground this year. Fleet Street is back in work at Invercargill, and, considering that he was foaled in 1934, he carries his age remarkably well. His form last season was remarkably good, his winning effort over six furlongs in lmin 12 l-ssec at Winton representing a fresh Southland record. Spare Part, who has been recommissioned by T. E. Pankhurst, has developed into an outstanding type of four-year-old and is one of whom a good deal should be heard in the new season. The Salmagundi gelding have promise of developing useful middle-distance form in the racing be did as a three-year-old.
