THE LAND SALES ACT

Sir,—ln contrast to “ Ex-serviceman,’ I find much in your article on the Servicemen’s Settlement and Land Sales Act with which I am not in agreement. The legislation was specifically designed to prevent land speculation in the post-war years, but we find, despite the Land Sales Act many properties are being sold far in excess of their original value on the basis of 1942 valuations. Still the Act has much to commend it and has served its purpose by keeping values within reasonable bounds. The housing shortage to-day looms as one of the major problems confronting the country, and one can well imagine how property speculation would have run riot but for this very necessary piece of legislation which has at least curbed the activities of those people who would be out to exploit the situation to their own advantage.—l am, ec„ Another Ex-serviceman.
