Many Casualties Among Arabs and Jews In Outbreak of Racial Warfare

Rec. 9 p.m. JERUSALEM, Aug. 14. As Arab-Jew clashes at Jaffa entered the fifth day, Jewish sources reported that one Jew and one Arab had been killed and nine Jews and four Arabs wounded on the bonier between the Arab city of Jaffa and the Jewish city of Tel-Aviv. Another report gives the casualties as four Jews killed and 20 injured. The British United Press correspondent says it is believed that the Arab rioters are mainly hooligans from the poorer quarters of Jaffa. They carry daggers, knives, and pistols. Several hundred Arabs raided Jewish vehicles driving through the Arab quarters on the outskirts. They set fire to a Jewish bus while passengers were inside. They also burned two Jewish factories. Hundreds of police cordoned off all roads between Jaffa and TelAviv, drove the Arabs into orange groves, • and arrested one armed Arab youth. The Daily Mail’s correspondent says thht 11 fires are raging near Tel-Aviv. The first serious incident was at noon, when 300 Arabs attacked the Jewish “shantytown” on the outskirts of Tel-Aviv. British troops fired on 250 Arabs who attacked traffic on the road from Jerusalem to Tel-Aviv. Four cars and one bus were overturned and burned. • The British United Press correspondent reports that a large Jewish timber yard was set on fire and the damage at the yard - alone is estimated at £IOO,OOO. The latest outbreak is said to be a reprisal for the burning of an Arab market yesterday. Jews soaked five Arab houses in Salama with paraffin and set them alight. The Communist Arab National League of Jerusalem cabled the United Nations accusing the British security forces in Palestine of standing idly by while Arabs and Jews were massacred. It was the duty of the Security Council to intervene.
