Lord Mountbatten Pays Tribute to Indian Leaders
Rec. 1.15 a.m. KARACHI, Aug. 14. “ I pay a tribute to the great men, your leaders, who have helped to arrive at a peaceful solution for the transfer of power,” said Lord Mountbatten in a farewell address before the Pakistan Constituent Assembly. “The two new sovereign States have Governments fit to carry their great share of responsibility for the peace and progress of the world.” Lord Mountbatten read to the Assembly a message of greetings and warm wishes from King George. His Majesty said: “ I know I can speak for all sections of opinion within the
British Commonwealth when I say their support will not fail you in upholding democratic pi'inciples. I am confident that the statesiranship and spirit of co-operation which have led to the historic developments which you are now celebrating will be the best guarantee for your future happiness and prosperity. Be assured always of my sympathy and support as I watch your continuance of efforts to advance the cause of humanity.” Lord Mountbatten drove from the Constituent Assembly to Government House through three miles of cheering crowds and beflagged streets lined with British and Indian troops.
