BURNS MEMORIAL
STATUE NEXT TIME FIRST CHURCH STIPULATIONS If the proposed new memorial to the Rev. Dr Thomas Burns is to be erected at the Burlington street-Moray place corner of the First Churcn property it will have to be in the form of a statue. In addition, the plans of the new memorial will have to be submitted to the First Church deacons’ court for approval. These stipulations were made in a letter from the deacons’ court received by the Dunedin Presbytery last night. The letter stated that, at a special meeting of the First Church congregation, approval of the idea of erecting a suitable memorial to Dr Burns was expressed. The deacons’ court was authorised to arrange for the lease of the land required to the City Council, the terms of the lease to include those mentioned. The letter was received and referred to the special committee handling the matter, with power to act in the matter of approaching Synod for permission to lease the land required.
