SOUTH ISLAND CONFERENCE Mr W. R. Williams reported to a meeting of the Oamaru Chamber of Commerce oii Monday night that he had visited the Dunedin Chamber and had received a sympathetic hearing in connection with the proposal by the local i chamber that a conference of South Island chambers be held. The secretary, Mr 11. Hay, read correspondence from various chambers in which support for the conference was promised, although the chambers did not support the view, previously put forward bv the Oamaru Chamber, that the South Island should form its own associated chamber apart altogether from North Island interests. It was agreed to write to the Dunedin Chamber suggesting that it sponsor the proposed conference in Dunedin, and that the conference be held prior to the annual conference of the Associated Chambers. Mr W. R. Williams was in the chair at the meeting, and also present were Messrs H. S. Stevens. J. M. Benvie, R. 11. Watson I. M Armour. W. B. Willstced, L. A. Nicholson. .1. M. Sutherland. Whitaker and F. J. D. Blackgrovc. Mr R. B. Meek, representing the North Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association, waited cn the chamber with the suggestion that business premises be closed earlier on Show Day to give employees ample time to get to the Show Grounds for the parade.—After discussion it was decided to refer the matter to the Retailers’ Association.
