LATEST WINCH FACILITIES ON NEW FREIGHTER KOMATA
Winchmen working on the Union Company's new freighter Komata, which arrived at Dunedin on Saturday after making her maiden voyage, have no need to erect canvas shelters. Instead they operate the latest electrical winch gear from glassed-in houses, which are placed at 10 vantage points in the ship. The Komata is the first of the Union Company's fleet to have this innovation, although a few overseas ships visiting New Zealand have been fitted with winch- houses, which are a great boon to the winchmen working under unfavourable weather conditions. One of the men operating the winches on board the ship yesterday told a reporter that the condit ions were the best under which he had worked.
