INDUSTRIAL PLANS
FOUNDRY FIRM’S ENTERPRISE Big developments in an industry of great importance to Oamaru and also to the Dominion are foreshadowed by the impending visit of Mr G. T. Gillies, managing director of G. T. Gillies and Sons, Oamaru and Lower Hutt, and of the North Otago Engineering Company, Ltd., Oamaru, to Australia in connection with an extension on modern lines of the firm’s foundry in Oamaru. Mr Gillies will leave Oamaru today to join the plane at Auckland on August 13 for Australia, where he will visit all the main cities by air. A new building for the foundry is under way, extending the whole length of the block between Tees and Tyne streets. The construction work is of Oamaru stone, and it is hoped to have this large building completed at an early date. The moulding machines are being made in London, and electrical equipment is being supplied for the operation of the machines by a Swedish firm. It is expected that the foundry will be in full operation by June, 1948, and with modern equipment, in all departments it will be one of the most up-to-date south of the' equator.
