CLEVER HORSEMANSHIP

Broughton’s Winning Rides SWOOPS PERFECTLY TIMED Last season’s champion horseman, W. J. Broughton, started the new season on Saturday by riding two winners—Soneri in the Winter Cup and Beechwood in the Avonhead in each case the standard of his horsemanship reached that generally associated with a champion. Broughton is a past-master at bouncing his mounts out of the barrier and this was clearly demonstrated in the Winter Cup. When Soneri drew 23 at the barrier her handicap was added to considerably, but Broughton got her away so well that he was able to take her over towards the rails and trail Howe, from whom he apparently expected most danger to come. At the false rail Soneri’s jockey went for a run on the inner, but quickly realised that there was a possibility of being jammed. Changing his line of running, he timed his finishing swoop perfectly to win by the narrowest of margins. Even in the closest and hardest finishes, Broughton remains part and parcel of his mount and there is never the semblance of a roll that would impede it. The season is only one Saturday old, but there is little risk in saying that last season’s champion will again be well up on the list of successful horsemen, if not actually at the top.
