BRITISH TROOPS IN INDIA Rec. 11 p.m. LONDON, Aug. 2. Reuter’s New Delhi correspondent confirms the New Delhi radio report that British troops will commence to leave India on August 17. The announcement, which came from the armed forces’ headquarters in India, stated: “ British troops in India and Pakistan will have no operational role, nor will they have any responsibility for the maintenance of law and order, both of which rest with the Governments of the Indian Union and Pakistan. All British Army units located in the Dominions of India and Pakistan, until such time as they are withdrawn. will be under the command of Major-general L. G. Whistler, who will be designated general officer commanding British troops in India and Pakistan, from August 15.”
