OBITUARY
. DR GEORGE CRAIG PA WELLINGTON, June 11. A former Comptroller of Customs in New Zealand, Dr George Craig, C.M.G., 1.5.0.. LL.D., died in Sydney on Monday Born in Dunedin in 1873, he was educated at the Otago Boys’ High School and Victoria College. He joined the Customs Department as a
cadet at Timaru in 1892 and rose eventually to be Comptroller from 1923 to 1935. when he retired. Dr Craig is survived by his wile but his three daughters who were living in Malaya lost their lives in the Japanese invasion. Two of them were doctors and the other a lawyer. MR J. RHODES The death has occurred of Mr Jonathan Rhodes, of North-East Valley, at the age of 89 years. Mr -Rhodes came to New Zealand 60 years ago from England where he had been a prominent cricketer. During the'gold, dredging period he was a director of many of the mining companies both in Central Otago and the West Coast. He was the founder of the Otago Steam Laundry and Dye Works. He retired from business 40 years ago, and since then has assisted in the sub-division of St Clair, Tainui, and Glenroy. After his retirement, Mr Rhodes spent much of his time travelling, having circled the globe five times. He took a keen interest in sport, being president of of Hataitai Bowling Club in Wellington in 1913, president of the NorthEast Valley Bowling Club six times, and a vice-president of the Otago Lawn Tennis Association. An active worker in the prohibition movement, he was a keen member of the New Zealand Alliance. He was Mayor of North-East Valley when the borough was amalgamated with the city in 1910. He was for some time a councillor and was a Justice of the Peace. Mr Rhodes’s first wife died 16 years ago. and he later married Miss Blanche Langdon. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs W. A. Justice, and two sons, Messrs L. A. and C. H. Rhodes.
