FOOTWEAR IMPORTS
INDUSTRY ANTAGONISTIC ABILITY TO MEET DEMAND P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, June 4. Licences for the importation into New Zealand of 400,000 pairs of footwear from countries in the sterling area are to be granted to importers by the Minister of Customs, Mr Nordmeyer. Advice of the Minister’s intention to grant licences was received last Week by the industrial planning committee of the footwear industry.
The vice-president of the committee Mr J. A. East, said this evening that the industry in New Zealand, except the importing section, was definitely antagonistic to the proposal. The industry claimed that it could meet the demand in the Dominion and the planning committee, which acted in an advisory capacity to the Bureau of Industry, had made recommendations on those lines. The committee realised that there was a temporary shortage, but considered that the slack could be taken up within the next few months. Importing from overseas meant that approximately 140 operatives would be temporarily lost to the footwear industry for every 100 pairs of shoes imported.
