MARITIME COUNCIL
FOUR UNIONS CONCERNED EARLY ACTION PROBABLE Industrial Correspondent ' WELLINGTON, June 4. All four maritime unions—the New Zealand Merchant Service Guild, the New Zealand Cooks and Stewards’ Union, the Federated Seamen’s Union and the Marine Engineers’ Instituteare now considering the establishment of a joint maritime council. “ Recent events have proved conclusively the need for some form of joint consultative body,” says the executive council of the Seamen’s Union in a statement to members. “ It would be a body representative of all four organisations of seafarers in order ton ensure, as far as possible, unity of action in all matters of mutual concern.
“It was unanimously agreed by the representatives present at the recent compulsory conference on war risk payments to recommend to their respective organisations that a joint maritime council should be set up and it seems probable that this will be done in the near future.”
