FULL' SHUT DOWN CHRISTCHURCH ECONOMISES P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, June 4. The full extent of the South Island power crisis was brought home to the people of Christchurch this afternoon, when almost the whole metropolitan area was cut off for one hour. Hospitals, gasworks, factories, shops, and private homes all shared in the cut, which was made in an endeavour to keep the city’s consumption within the allocation fixed by the State Hydroelectric Department.
To-day’s cut was made almost without notice, but an announcement explaining the cuts to be made to-mor-row was issued after an emergency meeting of the City Council’s Electricity Committee. These cuts will be as follows: —“ Predominantly domestic ” areas, 3.30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 9.30 a.m. to 10 a.m.; total shut-down over whole area, 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
