USE OF CRUISER
SUPPLEMENTING CITY’S POWER SUPPLY INQUIRIES TO .BE MADE A suggestion has been made by a correspondent that one of the New Zealand cruisers, Bellona or Black Prince, could be used to supplement with their ■ steam-turbine engines the city’s “depleted power supply.” The writer adds that the Black Prince is out of commission at present, and should, therefore, be available. “ I am sure,” the letter adds, “that such a fine public service, which is in keeping with the highest traditions of the Royal Navy, would' find favour with their Lordships of the Admiralty and the Ne.w Zealand Naval Board.” The suggeston was referred to the city electrical engineer, Mr G. T. Edgar, who promised .to make inquiries. He pointed out that it would be essential that the ships generated alternating current of the same frequency and pressure as used in Dunedin. The Rangatira for example, would be admirable for such a purpose, he added. It generated power at standard New Zealand pressure and frequency, the same,- in fact, as that produced at the Dunedin converter station.
