KING GEORGE HANDICAP

Splendid Field Engaged

TOP-WEIGHT AMONG FAVOURITES

A field of 19 for the King George Handicap, the principal event on the flat at Wingatui on Saturday, must be regarded as very satisfactory, and the race should be one of the best of the meeting. Winners at the meeting in Detain, Air Ace, and Douglas Haig are engaged, and place-getters in Joygiver, Eudora, Brockie, and Deep Harmony are also included.

Joygiver ran a fine race in the Birthday Handicap to finish second with 9.4. He has 61b more to carry on Saturday over half-a-mile less ground. Sea Power was the pacemaker for the greater portion of the journey in the Birthday Handicap, with 9.3. He has lib more to carry on Saturday, but that should be more than counterbalanced by the shorter distance. Detain finished a good fifth in the Birthday Handicap, with 8.2, and won the Provincial Handicap from end to end on Monday with the same weight. He has 8.13 in the King George Handicap, and meets Joygiver on 51b worse terms than when they met in the Birthday Handicap. There may be something in the balance of the field capable of springing a surprise, but at the moment the handicap seems to pivot around the three horses mentioned.
