CASE DISMISSED
CHARGE AGAINST TRUCK DRIVER “He will plead guilty to a technical breach of the regulations," said Mr A. N Haggitt, in the City Police Court yesterday, when appearing for William Vernon Arthur, who was charged with driving a motor vehicle without due care' and attention. Senior Sergeant D. Vaughan said that on April 16 the defendant had driven his truck into the yard of the Milburn Lime and Cement Company, in Bond street. He had then started to back on to the street again. Another truck was parked outside the entrance and a person was crushed between the two trucks. The senior sergeant stated that the driver of the other truck would be prosecuted for wrongful parking. "It might have been a serious accident,” he said, adding that the person had not been seriously injured. Counsel said the defendant had backed out of the yard to allow another vehicle to emerge and the truck behind had driven up without his knowledge, in front of the entrance. No serious harm had been done. He asked for a dismissal of the case. “ Owing to the peculiar circumstances the case will be dismissed,” said Mr J. D. Willis, S.M., who directed the defendant to pay courts costs (10s) Adjourned for Three Months ”He is quite a good worker if under supervision,” said Senior Sergeant Vaughan in the case of John Hughes, aged 32, a labourer, who had pleaded guilty to being idle and disorderly in that he had insufficient means of support. An adjournment had been granted on Tuesday to enable inquiries to be made. The magistrate commented that he would not accept the plea in the meantime, and he hesitated to enter a conviction. . The case would be adjourned for three months, provision to be that the defendant would be under the supervision of the probation officer (Mr E. F. Mosley), who would direct his work.
