HOCKEY NOTES

COMMENTS AND CRITICISMS

With one more game to play in the first round of the senior competition the teams have at last sorted themselves out. Oamaru A, unless it is defeated by Rovers on Saturdav, will head the ladder at the beginning of the second round, followed by Tainui Black, with Oamaru in third place. Ladder points are as follows: Oamaru _ . .

It is the opinion of the writer that either Oamaru A or Tainui Black will emerge the victors as these two teams, judged bv the scores lor and against, are the strongest in the competition. The time is drawing near when the association will be looking for representative games, and individual players will have lo improve their standard considerably if the North Otago team expects to carry off honours this season. The exhibitions seen last Saturday were not all that could be expected in senior hockey. The selector, Mr N. Pinder. has a wealth of talent to choose from, and undoubtedly he will choose those players who show combination and fitness.

It must be disappointing to the junior players to find that they are being somewhat neglected. The association during the school vacation has done its best to arrange games for these players, but the individual clubs have not given the cooperation that was expected of them. Last Saturday a game was arranged between Tainui and Rovers combined v. Oamaru combined, and the starting time was set down for 1.30 p.m. At five minutes to two one or two enthusiastic senior members were trying to sort out two teams and at 2 p.m. the game commenced and continued until 2.30 only. These boys are the coming players of Oamaru, and if dubs expect to hold them in the sport, they will have to give them more consideration. A fine exhibition of goal-keeping was given by H. Pickup, playing for Waimate last Saturday. It has been a long time since such a competent goalie has been seen in Oamaru, and undoubtedly he will be selected for representative trials. Pickup is an ex-Otago representative. Oamaru v.
