HISTORIC NAME
THIRD IN COMPANY’S FLEET
The Somerset, a refrigerated cargo ship of 9942 tons, visited this port last December on her maiden voyage from Liverpool. She was built at Glasgow only last year for the Federal Steam Navigation Company, and has been engaged on the Dominion trade under the agency of the New Zealand Shipping Company. At the time of the mishap the Somerset was on her way to New Zealand with general cargo for discharge. There has been a Somerset sailing on the Federal Company's trade routes since 1902, and this vessel is the third of her name to fly the company’s flag. Other ships of the same class as the Somerset are the Norfolk and the Devon. The latter is due here about April 24. The company has five more ships of the same class under construction. These post-war frieghters are fitted with all the latest aids to navigation, including radar. The Somerset’s complement numbers 62.
