HARBOUR BOARD SHEDS

CLEARANCE OF GOODS EXTENSION OF TIME SOUGHT The clearance of goods from harbour board sheds was the subject of representations to the Otago Harbour Board by the Otago Commercial Transport Association, stated a letter from the secretary of the association, Mr J. W. Wilson, which came before the monthly meeting of the Council of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce yesterday evening- . ~ The letter stated that the association was somewhat perturbed at being allowed only two working days for the clearance of sheds and asked that the time should be extended to four days. Over the past few years the conditions of the transport operator had become more and more embarrassing, due to the introduction of the 40-hour week, the unavilability on occasions of a supply of railway wagons because of the lack of rolling stock, and the inability of transport operators to arrange for a quick despatch from the harbour board sheds owing to the lack of efficient sorting on discharge. Bound up with this was the question of inadequate shed accommodation. The association expressed its pleasure that the board now had this matter in hand. Mr W. J. Winefteld said he believea that the Harbour Board was favourablv disposed to an extension of the time for clearances from the sheds. Conditions on the waterfront between the Harbour Board, importers, and carriers were very satisfactory at the present time. . . . .. The matter was referred to the executive.
