Mr M. Silverstone left for Wellington yesterday. Mr J. W. Johnston has been appointed lecturer in prosthetic dentistry at the National Dental School.

Dr D. W. Carmalt-Jones has joined the staff of the Otago Museum as honorary keeper of the Department of Ceramics. Reference was made by the president, Mr C. J. Wood, at the monthly meeting of the council of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce yesterday to the death of Mr Frederick Hall. Mr Wood said that Mr Hall was well known to the commercial community, particularly to those interested in the milling industry. A motion of sympathy with the relatives was carried. Mr J. I. Fraser was welcomed as a member of the Council of the University of Otago at its monthly meeting yesterday Mr Fraser was appointed by the Education Board as its representative in place of the late Mr James Wallace. Mr Sydney Jacobs, who for many years has been the representative of the Associated Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand on the Council of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce of the British Empire in London, will address a luncheon meeting of members of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce in the Somerset Lounge next Tuesday. Before his departure on a bunsiness trip to Great Britain and America, Mr H. J. Luff was met by members of the Dunedin Footwear Manufacturers’ Trade Group, and was made a presentation on behalf of the assembled manufacturers bv Mr S. D. Macpherson. Appreciation of Mr Luff’s services to the footwear trade in Dunedin was expressed by Mr Macpherson. Mr Luff will study the latest t-ends in footwear manufacture

Mr E. C. D’Arcy, who has been the manager of the Timaru branch cf Messrs Briscoe and Co., Ltd., for the last 13 years, has been appointed manager of the Dunedin branch. Mr D'Arcy began his business career with the firm in Dunedin in 1918, and in 1925 he was transferred to Timaru as a traveller, returning to Dunedin in 1931. Until 1933 he represented the company in the North Otago and town districts as a traveller. He was then appointed manager of the Timaru branch. Mr T. McAllen, who has been representing the company in North Otago and Dunedin districts, has been appointed Timaru manager, and Mr C. D. Scott will become assistant manager of the Dunedin branch.
