DOMINION ARTIST
EXHIBITION OF WORK ARROWTOWN STUDIES An exhibition of landscapes in oil and water colours of a young Christchurch artist. Mr William A. Sutton, was opened in the Pioneer Hall last night by the Mayor, Mr Cameron, and the president of the Otago Art Society. Dr A. H. McLintock. Prior to the opening ceremony, a large number of art lovers took the opportunity of a private view of the collection. Though only a comparatively small number of the artist's works are on exhibition, they are sufficient to show Mr Sutton’s mastery of technique, and the faithful representation of form, especially the 15 pictures painted during the artist’s recent visit to the Arrowtown district. After discussing some of the merits of Mr Sutton’s work. Dr McLintock stated that the artist was leaving for Britain shortly to continue his studies. “ I hope.” he added. “ that when Mr Sutton has completed his work overseas he will be daring enough to take the risk of returning to his native land.” The Mayor said that in some ways the exhibition, was a historic one, as it was the last time that the present hall would be used for such a purpose, as the Early Settlers’ Association would be making considerable tions to the hall and the adjoining one for the purposes of the Centennial Exhibition in March of next year. Mr Sutton’s work, he said, was of great cultural value to the Dominion, and he hoped the exhibition would prove an outstanding success and that the artist would pay another visit to Dunedin on his return from overseas. The exhibition will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. until April 24.
