QUEENSTOWN BOWLING A sweepstake doubles tournament took place on the Queenstown greens last Saturday. Fifty-six players took part, occupying both greens. The majority of the players were visitors, and some firstclass bowling was witnessed. C. A. Stewart and W. Scobie were' the only skips with four wins on the old green, the former winning on the aggregate score of the first two games. For the leads B. A. Vercoe and L. Cameron tied with four wins, Vercoe winning on the aggregate. On the new green Erridge and Kemshed had four wins to their credit, Erridge winning on the aggregate. Grant, with 31 wins, won the leads’ prize. The tournament w.as capably organised by Mr V. Scandrett. < PICNIC EXCURSION Among many pleasant outings on the lake this summer was an excursion to Half-way Bay on Sunday on the s.s. Earnslaw. The picnic was sponsored by St. Joseph’s Church. Nearly 500 availed themselves of the outing, which was held in ideal weather. THE WEATHER The weather during the past week has been more settled than for months past. Cloudless skies and a hot sun have enabled visitors to live out of doors, and the lake excursions have been Very popular. • has still a large number of visitors. CRICKET The Queenstown Ramblers Cricket Club challenged Cardrona on Sunday for the Burnett Shield. The match, which- was drawn, was played in fine weather on a fast wicket. Cardrona went in first and after batting for four hours declared for 248 for the loss of nine wickets. • A. Bovett 77. D. Scurr 58, H. Miller 34 were the highest scorers. C. Nelson, who took five wickets for 34, was the most successful bowler. Queenstown, with a little more than two hours to play, compiled 172 runs for seven wickets. F. Ande/rson 41, T. Luckie (not out 39) and O. Wheatley (20) were the most successful batsmen and G. Scurr bowled well for Cardrona. Cardrona handed the shield over to Ramblers. FIRE HAZARD - Since the weather has become drier the menace of fire has become greater, and on Monday last a clump of gorse caught fire in a property known as Lynch s on the Frankton road within a mile of the town boundary. The fire brigade was called cut, but no water was available. Fire-fighting, which was carried out by the brigadesmen assisted by several onlookers prevented the blaze from spreading to Queenstown hill.
