COLTS’ MATCH

INNINGS WIN FOR OTAGO GOOD DISPLAY BY BUCKENHAM Otago defeated North Otago by an innings and 62 runs in the match for players under 25, which was concluded at Carisbrook yesterday. Conditions were almost perfect when play was resumed at 10 minutes past 10, and North Otago, which had been disposed of in the first innings for the poor total of 34 in reply to Otago's first innings score of 280, carried its score in the second innings from 18 for the loss of one wicket to 184 before the last wicket fell at 12.35 p.m„ the innings having occupied 175 minutes. The, visitors were assisted by the fact that the Otago captain, L. A. Milnes did not make use of his recognised bowlers until near the end of the morning, and then when E. Watson was brought on he was freely hit. The Waitaki Boys’ High School colt, M. Buckenham, who had taken three wickets for 37 runs in Otago’s first innings, completed an impressive double by playing one of the best innings of the match for 72 not out. He went in second wicket down, and beginning confidently, quickly reached double figures. He timed the ball well and hit hard, his score including eight 4’s and three 6’s, the 6’s coming from effortless strokes. His off-driving was a feature, but altogether the young North Otago batsman gave an extremely promising display without the semblance of a chance. His last-wicket partnership with M. Dick was the brightest of the match, and added 58 to the score,. Dick’s contribution being 22. Dick, a left-hander, played a good innings, bringing off some very nice strokes and hitting four 4’s. Of the others, D. Campbell batted soundly for 22, and J. Hall looked like settling down when he was smartly stumped by Gailaway off L. Watson. J Watson scored 17 fairly quickly before he was bowled by a " wrong ’un ” from D. Coombs. Although Coombs’s length was a little erratic, he was the most successful of the Otago bowlers, and with his leg-spinners accounted for five wickets for 55 runs from 15 overs. L. Watson also had some success with his slows and took two wickets for 28. Scores:— Otago First innings 280 North Otago First innings .. .■ 34 Second Innings D. Campbell, b L. Watson .. .. .. 22 K.
