ROWING AT MACANDREW BAY

In spite of the boisterous conditions, which at one stage necessitated a postponement of several events, the rowing at the Macandrew Bay Regatta on Boxing Day provided a number of good contests. The best race of the day was the Senior Fours, in which the North End crew (D. Cohnor str, W. Neame, D. Clark, and D. Calder) put up a fine performance to win by a narrow margin. North End has started the season well, and if it retains the form already shown it should be a difficult club to head off in the harbour premiership, in the points for which it already has a substantial lead. A feature of the Senior Fours’ race on Boxing Day was the closeness of the contest throughout, North End, Otago, and Port Chalmers, last 'season’s New Zealand champions, being in company over the whole distance, with Queen’s Drive very close behind. There was only six feet between the first and third boats at the finish, Otago just managing to head Port off for second place, three feet astern of North End. With three wins, four seconds, and three thirds, North End was the most successful club at the regatta, securing £l6 in trophies. Otago secured second place, with two wins, two seconds, and one third, and £8 10s in trophy money, Queen’s Drive was third with two wins and a. third and £7 in trophies, Pori Chalmers securing one win, two seconds and a third to gain £5 10s. At the conclusion of the day the premiership points to date were as follows:—North End 104, Otago 64, Queen’s Drive 32, Port Chalmers 8. The class points were as follows: Youths: North End 21, Port Chalmers 7, Queen’s Drive 1, Otago 1. Maidens: Otago 15, North End 6, Port Chalmers 5, Queen’s Drive 4. Juniors: Otago 13, North End 9, Dunedin 7. Seniors: North End 14. Port Chalmers 9, Otago 5. Queen’s Drive 2.
