PICKLED PELTS
ARRANGEMENTS FOR MARKETING (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 30. The conditions under which pickled sheep and lamb pelts of the 1946-47 killing season are to be marketed have been arranged, said the Minister of Finance, Mr Nash, in a statement tonight. It has been agreed between the New Zealand and United Kingdom Governments that 30 per cent, of the Dominion's exportable surplus, calculated as two-thirds of the United Kingdom’s requirements, will be allocated to the United Kingdom. In addition, the United Kingdom will preserve the right to compete for the remainder of her requirements at periodic auctions, the first of which, it is hoped, will be held in Wellington at the end of January. Prices are as follows for North Island works:—62s 6d per dozen for lamb pelts; 100 s per dozen for sheep pelts, f.0.b., New Zealand currency, with differentials for the North and South Islands and districts proportionate to the ceiling prices ruling prior to June! 30, 1946. The Minister said the difference between these and the old ceiling prices would be paid to the marketing Department to the credit of the Meat Industry Stabilisation Account. The allocation to the United Kingdom would flow through the normal trade channels and leave 70 per cent, of New Zealand’s exportable surplus to meet the requirements of the United States, Canada, Australia and other normal markets The 70 per cent, would be sold at auction, the buyers paying the ceiling prices ruling prior to June 30, 1946 to the vendors and the remainder to the Meat Industry Stabilisation Account. The disposition of all pickled sheep and lamb pelts would be under the control of the general manager of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board, who would be appointed New Zealand pelt controller.
