THE WHEAT PRICE

Sir,—Mr Frank Hood still maintain? that the present price for wheat is a very fair one. That being so, it is up to him to increase his sowings and to persuade his neighbouring farmers to do likewise. It now appears that Mr Hood does not think the Government should encourage wheatgrowing on any but tno best land, and considers that Canterbury is the logical place for the wheat quota to be grown. It is not my place to speak for the farmers of Canterbury, but I suggest that, if wheatgrowing is so good a proposition as Mr Hood makes out, there should be not the slighest difficulty in getting enough wheat grown to meet the country’s requirements That this is not borne out by past experience is sufficiently obvious to all.—l am. etc., 3. S. Elliot. Middlemarch, August 25.
