GAME OF BILLIARDS

CONTROL IN DOMINION MEETING OF ASSOCIATION The annual meeting of the New Zealand Billiards’ Association and Control Council was held yesterday morning, when 14 delegates from various parts of New Zealand attended. The vice-president, Mr C. A. Hill, of Dunedin, was voted to the chair. Mr A. L. Albertson moved' that the council ratify the proposals made at the last annual meeting concerning the reinstatement of amateur members.—Carried Offer of Shield An offer was made by Billiards’, Ltd. (Wellington), to provide shields for both the New Zealand billiards' and snooker championships, to be engraved with the winners’ names and districts The offer was accepted, and the secretary was instructed to write thanking the firm. Appointment of Referees The official recorder (Mr Albertson) reported that the Canterbury Association had been delegated to hold the first snooker championship during the year, which had proved a distinct success. He made a number of suggestions for the future conduct of tournaments. Referring to the appointment of-referees, the speaker said he had received from the British Control Council a questionnaire for applicants for such posts. He intended to appoint examiners in each of the centres, who would test any applicants. Office-bearers Elected The election of office-bearers resulted as follows:—Patron, Mr F. W. Vosseler (Wellington); president, Mr C. A. Hill (Dunedin); vice-president, Mr J. R. Molloy (Auckland); recorder, Mr A. L. Albertson; auditor, Mr H. Fiddes; secretary and treasurer, Mr G. R. McCrae. The following proxies were appointed:—Auckland, Mr H. Fiddes, Christchurch, Mr W. C. Proctor; Wellington, Mr W. Turner. Roster of Tournaments A lengthy discussion took place on the establishment of a roster providing for the venue of future Dominion billiards and snooker tournaments, and it was finally decided to hold the billiards tournament at Auckland in 1947, and then at Christchurch, Wellington, and Dunedin in successive years. The snooker tournament will be held in the same centres in the years following the billiards tournament. Empire Championship It was pointed out by ’Mr Albertson that the British Empire billiards championship would be held in Calcutta in December of this year. It was desirable that New Zealand should be represented, as it was hoped to have the 1950 tournament in Christchurch in which year an exhibition was to be held in that centre. It was agreed that a representative be sent to the championships to be held in India. It was also decided to make an application for the British Empire championship to be held in New Zealand in 1950. Championship Competitions The question of. country players being able to take part in New Zealand tournaments ,was raised hy Mr J. J. Shepherd (Auckland), who said that if entry In Dominion championships were confined only to those who had graduated through provincial tournaments, some would be excluded. Many good players resided away from the main centres, and would be at a disadvantage through having to travel considerable distances to the venue of the provincial tournament. It was pointed out by a delegate that in Australia the national championships were open to all players, and an elimination round was staged. The matter was left In the hands of the local associations.
